Examples Of Existing College Magazines

The main image is a mid-shot of a female student of the college. She is smiling and wearing a 'I Love SMU' shirt which is all used to create the image of her enjoying herself and enjoying the college she's at, which may make readers think outs a good college to be at. The background is presumably of the campus of the college. Its behind the main image and not in focus so your attention is drawn to the main image more but it may also be so you go and research the place some more, to see what the campus really looks like. The background is quite sunny and the student is quite pretty and blonde which creates an 'all american girl' sort or image which could be familiar to readers. The colour red is used a lot which has connotations of passion, which could mean the students are passionate about their college, and it is also a very eye-catching colour. Overall it creates a visually pleasant front cover.
The layout is quite simple and straightforward, with the masthead at the top, the story headlines framing the main image and the barcode in the bottom corner. This layout doesn't draw focus away from the main image, which is probably the main selling point of the magazine
The story headlines are quite attention grabbing with stories like 'she's 15 & pregnant' and 'avoid sleeping your way to the top'. These headlines seem rather controversial and not the usual sort of stories you'd expect to find in a college magazine.
The ideology of this magazine seems to be emphasising on student happiness and speaking out about controversial issues that may occur within colleges.

The main image is a mid close-up shot of a female student laying on the grass, with a lazy sort of smile looking relaxed and happy. This gives the impression of a relaxed atmosphere at the college. She is wearing all black which contrasts well against the green of the grass.
The layout is quite organized, with the masthead at the top of the page slightly to the left, with the inside stories headlines beneath it and the main story headline taking up the bottom right corner. This draws the readers attention to the main headline but also focuses attention on the other stories because its beneath the masthead and readers tend to look at the masthead first. Most of the text is white which stands out well and is simple and straightforward which could give the impression that the magazine is quite an easy read.
The story titles seem typical of what you'd expect from a college magazine, stories about upcoming events, 'Halloween Party' and about NUS discounts. Things that may appeal to the target audience which is primarily students.
The ideology of this magazine seems to be about showing the relaxed atmosphere of the college.

The main image is a mid-shot of a student in action, doing practical science work. This is an appropriate image as the college is a fairly prestigious one and using an action shot could show how they're serious about their work. The background is a classroom white board with some sort of science work on which with the lab equipment at the bottom of the cover adds to the overall effect of making it seem like the reader is looking into a classroom, watching the student do her practical work. It adds a sophisticated air to the magazine by including the science equipment which again captures the high prestige of the college.
The overall colour scheme is quite neutral, with mainly whites, greys and blacks which adds to the slightly more sophisticated feel of the magazine. Also, by having the student wear a pink top, which is the brightest colour on the cover, it draws main focus to image.
The layout is simple with the main story in a larger font and the other stories off to the side in smaller font. Having the other stories in green coloured text brings more attention to them.
The masthead is across the top of the page in simple white text which doesn't steal focus from the main image. The main story headline is 'Doing Science at Beloit' which is in keeping with the theme of this issue. Its also the type of story you'd expect to find in a college magazine, talking about the subjects offered at the college.
The ideology of this magazine seems be showing the quality of subjects offered with showing a practical lesson in progress.
