Evaluation - Q1 Brief Analysis

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have created a house style throughout my products by continuously using the same colour scheme of purple, white and blue and using the same font style throughout (Bleeding Cowboys). I have also made sure the page numbers on the DPS match up to the contents page correctly, and used the same model to pose for pictures as the main featured artist on the front cover and the DPS.
I have followed most conventions when making my products, with the placement of writing on the pages the same as most music magazines and a consistent colour scheme used. The only convention I really challenged was the pose of my model on my DPS, most music magazines conventionally have the artist looking towards to the audience to try and engage them and make the magazine more sellable, however I opted to have my artist looking away from the camera as it reflected her emotions mentioned within the interview on the DPS.

Audience Feedback

I handed out my final products to two friends and asked them to give audience feedback to a set of questions about the magazine.

Audience Feedback 1

1. Would you buy this music magazine?
No, but I dont buy music magazines anyway.
2.  Do you think this is reasonably priced for a bi-weekly magazine? (Priced at £2.50)
Yes as it is cheaper than most other music magazines that come out weekly, and you get free posters in         the first issue which seems like a good deal
3. Do you think the front cover is eye catching?
Yes, I particularly like the style of the font and I think the colours are very attention grabbing.
4. What is your favourite feature about the front cover?
The font and the colour scheme are attractive and fit the style of this magazine well.
5. Do you find the contents page to have a simple, easy to understand/use layout?
Yes, there are clear headings and its arranged sensibly into clear categories.
6. Do you think the DPS is eye catching?
Yes, there is a large striking photo and I think the qoute gets your attention and makes you want to read the article.
7.Do you think the article is interesting/ enjoyable to read?
Maybe if I liked Twilight I would, but its just not very appealing to me personally.
8. Do you like the colour scheme and do you think it is consistent throughout the magazine?
Yeah, I think its quite eye catching and I can clearly see the purple, white and blues throughout.
9.What do you like best about the magazine?
The font because it makes the magazine stand out from others.
10.What do you dislike the most about the magazine?
The white backgrounds on the cover and contents page look a bit bland and empty.

Audience Feedback 2

1. Would you buy this music magazine?

Yes; it's relevant to my interests
2.  Do you think this is reasonably priced for a bi-weekly magazine? (Priced at £2.50)I think it's a reasonable price considering it'd need more of a profit if it were to improve
3. Do you think the front cover is eye catching?Yes, the picture is quite good and draws attention.
4.What is your favourite feature about the front cover? There isn't too much text on it. This makes it look less messy than most magazines do.
5.Do you find the contents page to have a simple, easy to understand/use layout? It could be neater, but overall it's easy to read and it doesn't look bad
6. Do you think the DPS is eye catching?Yes, I like how bold the picture and the text look against the background
7.Do you think the article is interesting/ enjoyable to read?Yes, I like the straightforward questions
8. Do you like the colour scheme and do you think it is consistent throughout the magazine? The contrast between the blue and purple is nice. Yes, it seems consistent.
9. What do you like best about the magazine? I like how simple it is.
10. What do you dislike the most about the magazine?I dislike that there aren't more pictures.

Response To Peer Feedback

After reading the feedback I think I need to reseach into similar magazines more and do a post comparing other front covers and discussing the features I like from them. And then maybe do an analysis of my own front cover.
I need to improve on my front cover more, add more articles to it with better descriptions of the existing articles on the cover. I need to think about changing the layout a bit and making it look better overall.
Also, Im going to think about changing the background colour and finding a way to make the text stand out more.
I need to add a few conventions such as an issue number and maybe a plug.

From looking at other poeples work Im going to add more detail to my work and try to bring it to a better standard, like the other blogs Ive seen.
Also I need to repost my drafts with explanations and analysis, saying why Ive changed certain things and how I could improve on each one.

Overall assessment of blog: Over all I think your blog is up to date very well set out and organised. I also love the work you did for your ideas for the make up, costumes etc. And you have showed your development process of your magazine which is great.

Strengths of front cover: I like your main image you have used on you're front cover and the font used on the mast head. I like the box layout across the front of the main image. And you have followed basic conventions making your magazine seem realistic.

Areas for development and improvement: I like the colour scheme you have gone for however I think that the background colour doesn't work well with the colour of the masthead/features as the features don't stand out as much as they should. Try adding a box around certain features to highlight them making them seem of high importance to your audience.

This blog has plenty of posts and the posts are of a good quality and this is organised well so that there isn't posts all over the place.

Your front cover could have an issue number on it to make it more conventional also the groups of articles in the banner could have been at the bottom as a footer which would have been more conventional although some magazines do this. The exclusive interview story could have a description that is shorter so that you could fit more articles on the cover. The masthead also goes over part of the model's head. However overall the front cover is good and I think the text at the top is interesting.

Peer feedback: Oliver Wright

I like the blog overall because there are lots of posts so you have obviously put a lot of thought into it.
I think that you should spread your stories out across the page a bit more because it looks a bit confusing with them all along the bottom of the page. The image on the cover is good and the spiders web on your models eye fits the genre.

Blogger Feedback: Isabel

The blog is a good blog and it's full of posts.
The post about hair/make up/ props and costume post is great as you have used lots of pictures and written a fair bit. I also think that the image taken for you front cover is a good image.

To change the blog I would do some more research into magazines the same as yours and pick out things you like in the front covers and talk about them. Also you could do a brief analysis on your front cover and just talk about why you chose which font, which colour etc.
The front cover could change by adding more to it. Maybe a plug?
